Air throughput/Fan performance

To ensure that your rangehood operates to maximum efficiency, it is important to calculate the air throughput for the room before you buy your rangehood, as the room volume of the kitchen and the air change rate are both key factors. Air change rate is determined by hood type, personal cooking habits and preferences, and optimum air change can be achieved without unnecessarily high energy consumption.

Air throughput/Fan performance
The air throughput is the number of cubic meters of air extracted by the rangehood per hour (Value in m³/h).

Air change rate
The air change rate quantifies how often the total air volume of a room is exchanged in an hour.

How is optimum air throughput calculated?
After calculating the room volume, 20% is deducted to account for furniture. Depending on how often and how intensively you cook, you then select the level for the hood that equates to the number of room air changes required. The 20% deduction for furniture is not required in the calculation for an open plan kitchen.

Required air throughput

Level 1 – 2: 2 × room air changes + basic air requirement 100 m³
For gentle and normal frying and cooking.

Level 3: 6 × room air changes + basic air requirement 100 m³
For cooking and frying for longer periods at medium or high cooktop power settings.

Intensive setting: 8 × room air changes + basic air requirement 200 m³
For short-term high levels of cooking vapours and when frying intensively with oil or fat.

Tip
The results do not account for losses from ducting.
Ducting can have a negative impact on performance. This should be taken into consideration when calculating the air change rate.
